The Fluidity of Design: Examining the Waterfall Seat Design

An ergonomic office chair, with a waterfall seat design, offers numerous benefits that can help promote better health, comfort, and productivity. Prolonged sitting can lead to various health issues and this blog explores how a chair with a waterfall design can help to prevent some of those problems.

What is a waterfall design?

A waterfall seat design can be clearly identified, as it will have a curved, sloping edge that resembles a waterfall to the front of the seat. The design ensures that the front of the seat is slightly lower than the back, allowing an open seated position, with support provided to the area behind the knees.

What are the benefits of a waterfall design?

Improved blood circulation

The most significant benefit of a waterfall design in an ergonomic chair is improved blood circulation. Sitting in a chair with a flat seat can put pressure on the back of the thighs, which can compress the blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the legs. Over time, this can lead to discomfort, swelling, and even health problems such as varicose veins. The sloping edge of a waterfall seat design helps to reduce pressure on the back of the thighs, promoting better blood circulation and increased concentration thus leading to higher productivity.

Reduced pressure points

Sitting for prolonged periods can cause pressure points on your body, leading to discomfort and pain. A waterfall seat design can help reduce these pressure points by distributing weight more evenly across the seat. This design feature can help reduce the risk of developing pressure sores and other related health problems.

Increased comfort

The curved edge of a waterfall seat helps to support the legs and reduce pressure on the thighs, promoting better posture and reducing strain on the back. This design feature can help prevent back pain and improve overall comfort level while sitting. Nobody wants to sit in an uncomfortable chair!

Improved posture

When sitting in a chair with a flat seat, it can be challenging to maintain a proper posture as we tend to slide forward. The sloping edge of a waterfall seat design helps to maintain the natural curve of the spine, promoting better posture and reducing strain on your back.

Where does AirCare come into all this?

Although we don’t make office chairs, we do work closely with designers and ergonomic seating manufacturers and supply the seating components to produce some of the best office chairs available.

Customer Example

Recently we were posed with a "Goldilocks" question, a valued customer couldn't achieve the exact feeling he wanted from the waterfall element of their new seating design. Cut or moulded foam was either too hard or too soft and didn't hit that sweet spot he was looking for; PU was also difficult because they couldn't match the shore hardness of the PU to what they required.

So, we suggested a pre-filled air cell, shaped to fit into the front pocket of their plastic moulded seat, which would provide the preferred amount of comfort, whilst also offering the correct amount of support.

We hand-made some samples, prefilled and sealed the forms with varying amounts of air, and sent them to our customer within a matter of days. One of these samples, we are glad to say, solved our customers problem!

The development time and tooling cost was minimal, and you can see the shape in the picture above which has now been adopted by a major European component supplier.
